Potapova knocks out Anisimova in third round of US Open

In New York, United States, Austrian tennis player Anastasia Potapova advanced to the fourth round of the US Open after defeating 10th-seeded American Amanda Anisimova 6:2, 7:5. As Channel NewsAsia reports, this is Potapova’s first appearance in the fourth round of the tournament in New York.

Decisive breaks

In the first set, Potapova secured a love break in the third game and later converted another break point in the seventh. After the opening set, Anisimova spoke with her coaches for a long time.

The second set was more tense: the opponents exchanged breaks three times. Spectators at the Louis Armstrong Court supported the American player, but in the penultimate game she hit beyond the baseline on a break point and gave her opponent the advantage.

Match statistics

Over the match, Anisimova made 46 unforced errors. Potapova saved 13 of the 16 break points she had to defend. In the final rally, the Austrian withstood her opponent’s powerful baseline shots, after which the American again sent the ball out on match point.

In the fourth round, Potapova will face the winner of the match between Russian Mirra Andreeva and Czech Nikola Bartunkova.
