Zavatska won her opening match at the W75 tournament in Poland
Ukrainian tennis player Kateryna Zavatska got off to a strong start at the WTT W75 tournament in Bytom, Poland, which has a prize pool of $75,000.
In the first round, the world No. 251, seeded sixth, defeated Poland’s Weronika Ewald 6-3, 6-3. The match lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes.
To advance to the quarterfinals, Zavatska will face the winner of the match between Germany’s Sonja Zhenikhova and Polish tennis player Anna Kmecik.
The tournament in Bytom will run through August 30.
As a reminder, Elina Svitolina had a dramatic start to the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. The Ukrainian lost the first set, saved seven match points in the second, and then completely outplayed her opponent in the decisive set.
On August 11, Elina Svitolina defeated Russian Katerina Aleksandrova in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 in Toronto and advanced to the semifinals. The Ukrainian lost the first set but staged a comeback to win the match in three sets—3–6, 6–0, 6–3.
