Apple Patents a Signal to Detect Covert Filming

Apple is developing technology that can alert people when video or audio is being recorded on the company's devices. Instead of a discreet indicator, the devices could use an audible alert or vibration to notify users when hidden recording begins.

A recent patent describes the use of audible signals or haptic feedback (vibrations/taps).

These include:

  • User notification: An audible or haptic signal alerts the user that recording has started or is in progress. This addresses the issue of forgetfulness, when a person leaves the camera on.
  • Inclusivity: Audio and tactile notifications are more effective for people with visual impairments than traditional LEDs.

Experts note that continuous audio feedback throughout the entire recording process could be annoying or interfere with the audio recording itself, so the patent currently focuses on initial and status signals for the wearer.

A significant portion of the patent is devoted to cybersecurity, specifically preventing malicious software or hackers from taking control of the glasses.

To protect against tampering, Apple proposes the following solutions:

  • "Speaker-microphone" scheme: after the speaker plays a recording indicator sound, the device’s microphone immediately "listens" and captures that sound.
  • Protection against encoded copying: the system is capable of generating an audio signal containing encoded pairing information. This prevents malicious software from faking the stop-recording signal (such as the standard video-stop sound on an iPhone) to secretly continue recording.

In keeping with the tradition of its patent applications, Apple notes that the described technology can be applied to a wider range of electronic devices. In particular, the document mentions the Apple Watch.

However, the main focus of the application and its comprehensive security system is specifically on smart glasses and protecting the privacy of their wearer and those around them.
