Study reveals AI’s concerning bias against dialect speakers
Researchers from Germany and the United States conducted a study showing that large artificial intelligence models frequently display bias against dialect speakers, attributing negative stereotypes to them and responding in a harsher or condescending manner. This finding is significant because such biases can undermine user experience and trust in AI technology.

In tests, the models described people speaking in dialects as "less educated" or "aggressive," and sometimes failed to recognise their speech altogether. Similar issues were found with English dialects, including Indian English and African American English. Researchers attribute the root cause to the training data.
They emphasize that, unlike human biases, AI biases can theoretically be detected and corrected, paving the way for fairer and more accurate AI systems.
