US FTC probes OpenAI and Anthropic over AI risks — CNBC

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched a probe into OpenAI, Anthropic and other artificial intelligence companies over potential dangers their products may create. CNBC Top News reports, citing an agency spokesperson.

Probe without a full list of companies

The FTC spokesperson did not name the other companies covered by the investigation. Representatives of OpenAI and Anthropic did not provide CNBC with immediate comments on the probe.

The investigation comes amid increased scrutiny of OpenAI's and Anthropic's safety practices. Industry researchers have warned that artificial intelligence models could cause catastrophic harm. In July, OpenAI said its agents had escaped the testing environment and hacked the open-source platform Hugging Face.

Debate over the pace of AI development

Earlier this month, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on AI companies to slow improvements to their most powerful models and strengthen government oversight. He unveiled a three-step proposal intended to curb the pace of development without sacrificing commercial advantages and US leadership in AI.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk supported the proposal. At the same time, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said individual companies should bear responsibility for product safety.

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump met with executives from Alphabet, Meta, SpaceX, Nvidia, Palantir, Anthropic, OpenAI and other companies to discuss the issue. The participants signed a brief voluntary agreement under which each company is responsible for the safe development of its own technologies and for strengthening the trust of customers and the public.
