Infineon opens chip manufacturing facility in Thailand — Asharq Al-Awsat

German chipmaker Infineon Technologies has opened a new facility in Thailand for the final stage of semiconductor production. The site is located near Bangkok, where chips will be processed into finished and tested semiconductors, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.

Investment and production space

According to the company, initial investment in the project exceeds €100 million, or $113.57 million. At the same time, Thailand’s Board of Investment valued the entire project at $1.4 billion.

The facility will begin operations with clean rooms covering up to 30,000 square meters. Their area can later be expanded to 150,000 square meters. Such controlled environments are necessary for semiconductor manufacturing.

Infineon Chief Operating Officer Alexander Gorsky called the project a long-term strategic investment and pointed to Thailand’s proximity to key markets, including China. According to him, the new site will also enable the company to supply customers with products from Thailand in the event of problems at its plant in Malaysia.

Thailand’s semiconductor plans

Thailand aims to attract $18 billion in investment in the semiconductor industry by 2030. The country is focusing on photonics, power electronics and sensors.

According to Thailand’s Board of Investment, from 2023 through July 2026, the country attracted 910 billion baht, or $27.12 billion, in investment in the semiconductor sector and advanced electronics. The authorities also plan to train nearly 85,000 qualified workers and more than 1,700 researchers for the industry by 2030.

Infineon has 13 manufacturing sites in the United States, Europe, China and Southeast Asia. According to Gorsky’s estimate, the existing clean-room capacity could potentially allow the company to double its revenue.
