China warns US against use of artificial intelligence in military operations

China’s Ministry of Defense has criticized the potential expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) use in military contexts and warned against granting algorithms the authority to "decide life and death" on the battlefield. This statement was made by the ministry’s official spokesperson, Jiang Bing.

He highlighted that uncontrolled use of AI technology risks undermining the ethical constraints of warfare and blurring accountability for decisions made. He compared the potential consequences to the catastrophic scenario depicted in the American film "Terminator." The warning came amid reports that the Pentagon seeks greater military access to AI systems from American IT companies and has already employed AI tools in operations in Iraq and Venezuela. China insists AI must be applied with strict adherence to ethical standards.

This warning may heighten tensions in technological competition between the US and China and underlines the urgent need for international regulations governing military applications of artificial intelligence.
