The developers of Claude have called for a slowdown in AI development
Anthropic, the company behind the AI model Claude, has called on the AI industry to slow down the pace of development due to the risks of losing control over the technology. The company warns that AI could eventually become capable of creating its own future versions.
The developers of one of the most famous AI models, Claude, Anthropic, have publicly stated that the global industry should slow down the pace of AI development so that humanity has time to adapt to new technological risks and does not lose control over systems that are becoming increasingly powerful.
The company explains that artificial intelligence is already actively taking on increasingly complex tasks, and its role in developers’ work is constantly growing. In particular, they note that the Claude model already writes over 80% of the company’s code, whereas this figure was significantly lower before the launch of the Claude Code tool in early 2025.
Experts warn that the next stage of development could be a situation where artificial intelligence gains the ability to independently design and create new versions of itself. The company refers to this phenomenon as recursive self-improvement and acknowledges that it could both accelerate technological progress and pose serious threats. “Full recursive self-improvement could increase the risks of humans losing control over AI systems. If systems are capable of fully creating their own successors, then methods for their protection, monitoring, and behavior shaping become much more important,” Anthropic warns.
The company emphasizes that without common international development rules, the situation could escalate into a race between companies and nations, where safety takes a backseat. That is why they are calling for a more cautious approach and a possible temporary slowdown in the development of advanced models.
“Without a global coordination mechanism, companies and governments will have to make difficult safety decisions while under competitive and geopolitical pressure. We believe it would be good for the world to have the ability to slow down or temporarily pause the development of advanced artificial intelligence to allow societal structures to keep pace with technological development,” states the position of Claude’s developers.
Thus, one of the leading companies in the AI sector is, for the first time, explicitly stating the need to slow down the pace of development of technologies that were considered the main engine of the future just yesterday, but today already raise questions regarding safety and control. This was reported by Anthropic itself.
