A New Generation of Engineers: Ukrainian High School and College Students Who Are Already Working Toward Victory

While some Ukrainian teenagers are preparing for college admissions, taking exams, or participating in academic competitions, others are already working on projects that could save the lives of soldiers, assist bomb disposal experts, or make Ukrainian drones more effective. 

The full-scale war has served as a catalyst for a new generation of engineers who aren’t waiting until they finish their studies to contribute to their country.

Today, Ukrainian high school and college students are increasingly presenting their own technology projects at international competitions, collaborating with defense equipment manufacturers, and receiving support from the government and the private sector. For many of them, inventing has long since ceased to be just a hobby—it’s an opportunity to contribute to Ukraine’s security.

UA.News has compiled stories of young Ukrainians who, on their own, have created engineering solutions for the military, bomb disposal teams, the energy sector, and unmanned systems. Some of these developments currently exist as prototypes, while others are already undergoing testing or have received international recognition.

Student Develops a Drone to Help Save Deminers’ Lives

One of the most pressing issues since the start of the full-scale war has been humanitarian demining. A significant portion of Ukraine’s territory remains mined, and every time bomb disposal experts go out on a mission, they face enormous risk.

That is why Yuriy Yurchuk, a 20-year-old student at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, set out to create a special drone that will help remotely identify dangerous areas. His drone is designed to conduct preliminary reconnaissance of the terrain, reducing the time spent by deminers and minimizing the risk to their lives.

The project’s creator emphasizes that the main goal of the development is not to replace humans, but to ensure their maximum safety while on the job. If the drone can perform even a portion of the most dangerous operations, that alone will mean lives saved.

A 16-year-old high school student created a system to protect drones from electronic warfare

Another example is the invention by 16-year-old Vadym Dobrovolskyi from the Kyiv region. The young man focused on one of the biggest problems of modern warfare—the use of electronic warfare systems.

He created a system that allows a drone to automatically switch to a different communication frequency if the enemy begins to jam the signal. This gives the drone a better chance of completing its combat mission even when electronic warfare is actively underway.

The high school student presented his project at international competitions for young inventors and plans to further refine the system and adapt it for mass production.

A Transformable Demining Robot

Equally ambitious is the development by 15-year-old high school student Yermak Rogov from Shostka.

The teenager created a ground robot capable of operating in hazardous areas in place of a human. The machine is equipped with a camera, a manipulator, and mine-detection equipment.

According to the creator, the design can be adapted for various tasks. One of the project’s key features is the ability to transform the platform for other military needs, making it versatile.

Similar robotic systems are widely used around the world today, but the Ukrainian high school student decided to try creating his own version almost entirely on his own.

A reconnaissance drone that searches for mines

Another interesting invention was presented by Yuriy Tumir, an 11th-grade student from Ivano-Frankivsk.

The young man created a quadcopter capable of automatically surveying an area and determining the coordinates of potentially dangerous objects. The information is then transmitted to bomb disposal experts who are already working on specific locations.

According to the inventor, the idea came about after numerous reports of landmines in Ukrainian territories. Initially, he planned to build a ground-based robot, but later realized that an aerial platform would allow for much faster inspection of large areas.

That is why the final version became a drone for remote reconnaissance.

A KPI Lyceum student created a mine-detecting drone

Another example is the project by 17-year-old Ihor Klymenko, a student at the KPI Lyceum.

After the war began, he decided to change the topic of his research project and began developing a drone-based mine detector. The project quickly earned high praise from experts.

The project won competitions at the Junior Academy of Sciences and later gained international recognition. In particular, the invention was honored at the Malaysia Technology Expo and the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva.

The inventor himself has repeatedly emphasized that his greatest motivation was the war and his desire to help bomb disposal experts work more safely.

Brave Students: When Student Ideas Become Real Defense Technologies

It is also worth mentioning the government initiative Brave Students, which demonstrates just how great the potential of Ukrainian students is.

As part of the competition, dozens of student teams from various universities across the country were given a real-world engineering challenge: to create a mechanical attachment for an FPV drone that allows the drone to attach itself to trees, poles, or other objects without draining the battery.

These “claws” effectively transform an ordinary FPV drone into a so-called “standby drone,” which can remain in standby mode for a long time and then instantly attack a target.

Thirty-three teams from 15 universities and four colleges participated in the competition. The best projects have already been given the opportunity to be refined in collaboration with drone manufacturers, and the students themselves have been given the chance to transition from academic projects to real-world work in Ukraine’s defense tech sector.

Even “civilian” inventions can help the country

Not all young Ukrainian inventors work exclusively on military technologies.

For example, sixth-grader Artem Yasinsky created his own vertical-axis wind turbine capable of generating electricity even at minimal wind speeds.

At first glance, this is a civilian invention. However, given the constant attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, any alternative power sources are becoming particularly important.

The student’s invention makes it possible to generate electricity in places where conventional wind turbines are ineffective, and the project itself has already attracted the attention of the educational community and experts.

Just a few years ago, stories like this seemed more like the exception. Today, however, they are gradually becoming the new norm.

Ukrainian schoolchildren and students are increasingly not only winning science competitions but also working on projects that, until recently, were undertaken exclusively by professional design bureaus. They are creating robots, drones, electronic warfare defense systems, new mechanisms for FPV drones, and even alternative energy sources.

All these stories share one common trait—the desire to be of service to their country today, not just after graduation. This is precisely how a new generation of Ukrainian engineers is taking shape—a generation that, once the war ends, could become the backbone not only of the defense industry but also of Ukraine’s high-tech economy as a whole.
