Workers in the United Kingdom spend nearly £1 billion on AI for work — Deloitte
One in six workers in the United Kingdom pays for artificial intelligence tools to complete work tasks out of their own pocket. Employees’ combined annual spending on such services amounts to nearly £1 billion, according to a Deloitte study reported by Channel NewsAsia.
Use of generative AI
In Deloitte’s first GenAI Workforce Survey, two-thirds of respondents said they had already used tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. Nearly a quarter of respondents use them at work every day.
The survey results indicate that employees have begun using AI faster than employers are providing them with the relevant tools. According to Deloitte, 31% of participants used generative AI without their employer’s knowledge. This practice is called shadow AI.

Another 17% of respondents paid for at least one generative AI tool themselves for work purposes. Deloitte UK’s chief AI officer, Haley McKelvey, said that workers do not want to wait for permission to use such technologies and are already using free services or paying for premium versions.
Tasks and time saved
The most common ways AI was used at work were searching for information, drafting emails and preparing summaries. On average, this saves employees 70 minutes per week, the survey said.
Deloitte partner Paul Lee noted that, for many workers, generative AI so far mainly helps with finding information and preparing content rather than carrying out more complex work tasks. Ipsos conducted the survey for Deloitte among 25,000 workers.
