Sam Altman says OpenAI will not go public in 2026 — TechCrunch

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company does not plan to go public in 2026, although it has confidentially filed documents for an initial public offering. He said this in an interview with Fortune editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell, TechCrunch reports.

They will not rush the offering

Shontell asked Altman whether OpenAI feels pressure to develop rapidly because of its IPO plans. The question came amid the aftermath of a breach involving OpenAI and Hugging Face, as well as broader discussions about artificial intelligence safety.

Altman said that OpenAI is not rushing into an IPO. In his view, given the safety issues, going public now would be ill-advised.

Business readiness named as the condition

According to the head of OpenAI, the company will hold a public offering when its business is ready and when it considers the moment in society appropriate in light of the development of this technology. When asked whether this meant there would be no IPO in 2026, Altman replied that the offering would not take place this year because the company still has a lot to do.

In June, The New York Times wrote that OpenAI had hired bankers and lawyers with the aim of holding an IPO in the third or fourth quarter of 2026. At the same time, according to the publication, the company was leaning toward postponing the offering until 2027 due to volatility in technology company stocks and its own financial difficulties.
