What Happens If You Don't Update Your iPhone: The Risks for Users

Failing to update your iPhone may not have immediate consequences, but over time it can lead to serious problems—ranging from security vulnerabilities to app malfunctions.

One of the main risks is security. Apple regularly releases iOS updates not only with new features but also to fix discovered vulnerabilities. If you don’t install these patches, your smartphone may remain vulnerable to cyber threats and personal data leaks.

Another consequence is reduced compatibility with apps. Developers gradually stop supporting older versions of iOS, so over time, some apps may become unstable or stop launching altogether. This is especially true for banking services, messaging apps, maps, and productivity apps.

In addition, users lose access to new system features. Major iOS updates typically bring changes to standard apps, performance improvements, and new AI-powered tools and features.

Experts note that postponing an update for a few days or weeks is normal—for example, to free up memory or wait for reviews of the new version. But constantly ignoring updates is not recommended.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, as revealed during a court proceeding, was able to recover some messages from the Signal messenger on an iPhone even after the app had been deleted. This was possible because iOS stored the text from push notifications in the device’s system cache.

Apple has also released an urgent security update for older iPhone and iPad models.
