Apple has removed the Russian messaging app Max from the App Store due to sanctions
Apple explained that it removed the "Max" messaging app from the App Store to comply with sanctions laws.
Apple emphasized that it complies with the laws of the jurisdictions in which it operates, but did not specify which sanctions mechanisms served as the basis for removing the app.
Users noticed that "Max" had disappeared from the App Store on the evening of June 3. After that, the app stopped appearing in search results, became inaccessible via direct links, and began displaying errors when attempting to open the page.
In Russia, the “Max” messenger had previously been declared the “national messenger.” This occurred in the summer of 2025 amid tightening restrictions on other platforms.
At the same time, Russian authorities began restricting voice calls on WhatsApp and Telegram, blocking certain messenger features, and gradually increasing pressure on alternative services.
Subsequently, Telegram was completely blocked in Russia.
According to sources, the Russian opposition insisted on the removal of “Max,” viewing it as a tool of state control in the information space.
This is stated in a comment the company provided to the BBC Russian Service.
The American technology company Apple has removed the Russian messaging app Max from its App Store. From now on, the app is unavailable for download by users of Apple devices. The reasons for this decision have not been officially disclosed. Previously, the Max messenger was positioned as one of Russia’s digital services for messaging and communication between users.
