The Verge highlighted the affordable Elektron groove boxes for electronic music
The Verge highlighted two more affordable Elektron grooveboxes—the Model:Samples and the Model:Cycles. The publication’s editor, Terrence O’Brien, considers these instruments to be more powerful and interesting than one might expect given their budget-friendly positioning. He noted that he continues to return to the Model series even after purchasing more expensive and complex instruments.
Both devices are designed for creating electronic music, but they use different methods of sound generation. Model:Cycles is based on FM synthesis, while Model:Samples plays back samples. However, Model:Samples is not technically a sampler, as it cannot record samples: they must be loaded onto the device via USB.

According to O’Brien, Model:Cycles is built on a simplified version of the Digitone synthesizer’s sound engine. However, the author noted that connectivity isn’t one of Model:Cycles’ strengths.
The author writes that people looking for their first groove box often opt for better-known brands, such as Korg or Roland. In his opinion, the choice may also be influenced by Elektron’s reputation as a manufacturer of devices with a complex workflow. As a result, according to O’Brien’s assessment, the Model series falls somewhere between simpler solutions for beginners and Elektron’s more powerful instruments, such as the Digitone, Syntakt, Digitakt, Octatrack, and Tonverk.
