Universal Music Group to launch AI platform with ElevenLabs — The Verge

Universal Music Group is preparing to launch an artificial intelligence-based platform jointly with ElevenLabs. It is expected to allow users to work with licensed music from the UMG catalog by creating remixes, mashups, and new versions of tracks. The Verge reports.

Licensing and artist participation

The platform is being developed under a multi-year licensing agreement between UMG and ElevenLabs, which specializes in AI voice and music generation technologies. Artists will be able to decide independently whether to participate in the new service.

ElevenLabs CEO Mati Staniszewski said that combining UMG's experience in rights management and its global community with ElevenLabs' models and products should help artists and songwriters create new ways to engage with fans and receive fair compensation.

Future products

The future UMG and ElevenLabs platform will remain separate from the Music API and the ElevenMusic generator. The partnership also provides for the development of other products and formats for fans in the coming months and years, but the announcement contains no details about them.

This is not Universal Music Group's first agreement in the field of artificial intelligence. The company is also developing an AI music platform together with Udio and has entered into licensing agreements with Spotify, Nvidia, and Klay.
