China’s military AI lags behind the US amid Iran and Venezuela operations
06 March 2026 07:41China needs to accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into its military and enhance cooperation between civilian and military sectors to narrow the strategic gap with the United States. This was stated by Zheng Yongnian, a Chinese political scientist and dean of the School of Public Policy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Shenzhen.
He referred to targeted strikes by the US and Israel in Iran, which resulted in the death of the country’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling this an example of how deeply AI is embedded in American military operations. The largest American AI companies play a leading role in intelligence gathering, data processing, and operational execution. Zheng also pointed to a US operation in Venezuela in January, where an AI-based identification system was used.
Therefore, China must intensify efforts in military AI development to avoid falling behind the global leader – the US, which is critical for its future security and strategic position.
