This fall, WhatsApp will stop supporting some older smartphones running outdated versions of Android and iOS. This fall, WhatsApp will stop working on some devices running outdated versions of Android and iOS, as the service is updating its minimum technical requirements for users. According to the company’s help center, the changes will take effect in two phases: starting September 8, support will be limited to devices running Android 6 and newer versions, and starting November 30, only iPhones running iOS 15.5 and higher will be supported.
The service emphasizes that users with compatible systems will still be able to install the app, register their number, and use all basic features. However, to verify an account, users must be able to receive SMS messages or phone calls, as verification will not be possible without this.
The WhatsApp team explains that every year it reviews the devices and software versions used by a small portion of its user base and is gradually phasing out support for the oldest systems. The reason is that such devices often do not receive security updates and cannot ensure the stable operation of the messenger’s modern features.
Users of phones that do not meet the new requirements will receive a warning directly in the app reminding them to update their system or replace their device. In this way, the company is gradually transitioning the service to more modern technological standards. This was reported by the service’s help center.
