WSJ: OpenAI acquires Glass Imaging for more than $300 million
OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, based in Los Altos, California, United States, in a deal worth more than $300 million. TechCrunch reports, citing The Wall Street Journal. OpenAI did not respond to TechCrunch's request for comment on the deal.
Technologies for smartphone cameras
Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, former Apple engineers who previously led the team developing Portrait mode at Apple. The company had previously raised about $30 million in funding from investors.
Glass Imaging uses artificial intelligence to overcome the physical limitations of smartphone cameras. Rather than using AI to edit photos after they are taken, the company uses neural networks that study the characteristics of individual camera systems, including cameras in different smartphone models. This is intended to help produce higher-quality images directly when the shutter button is pressed.
