Russian military intelligence may be involved in the drone attack in Leipzig
An attempted attack using a drone carrying explosives at Leipzig Airport may be linked to a series of sabotage incidents in 2024, during which incendiary devices were used in DHL cargo shipments. This is according to the findings of a joint investigation by the media companies WDR, NDR, and the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
According to sources within security agencies, investigators noted a similar method of concealing the explosives. In Leipzig, a can containing a high-powered explosive was attached to a drone; it failed to detonate due to a faulty detonator. Similar cans were also mentioned in the materials from the Polish investigation into the 2024 case.
The Polish investigation’s findings indicate that the network responsible for planting incendiary devices was simultaneously transporting drone parts across Europe. The case involves a young Ukrainian citizen who, in the summer of 2024, used funds from clients on Telegram to transport drone parts, cell phones, and corn cans between the Baltic states, Poland, and Germany. The suspect himself denies having knowingly worked for Russian intelligence services.
Currently, this man, along with four other defendants, is on trial in Poland, while another trial involving five individuals is underway in Lithuania. In total, European investigators have identified more than 20 suspects, and two high-ranking officers of the Russian GRU are believed to have led the operation. A direct link between this network and the events in Leipzig remains a working hypothesis at this time and has not been officially proven.
