A police officer was found to be involved in the attempted assassination of Serhiy Sternenko – SBU

An active-duty police officer helped gather information to plan an assassination attempt on volunteer Serhiy Sternenko through the “Safe City” video surveillance system.

This was reported by Andriy Shvets, head of the SBU’s Main Investigation Department, in an interview with Censor.NET, noting that the law enforcement officer passed on data regarding the activist’s whereabouts to a recruited perpetrator. According to the security service representative, the attack was carried out by a woman, while the police officer used his official access to city surveillance cameras to track the victim.

Currently, the SBU has not specified the status of the police officer or whether he has been officially charged as part of the criminal proceedings. The “Safe City” system, which the perpetrator used, is designed to record violations and track criminals in real time, and access to it is restricted to police and security service operations centers. The investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances surrounding the use by Russia and its agents of municipal surveillance tools to commit crimes on Ukrainian territory.

As a reminder, on May 1, 2025, volunteer Serhiy Sternenko was shot and wounded. The attacker was detained, and the volunteer underwent surgery. The Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv extended the detention of Lyudmyla Chymerska and Mykola Popovych, suspects in the case of the attempted murder of activist Serhiy Sternenko, by 60 days.
