Speed cameras recorded more than 7,000 speeding violations in Kyiv and the surrounding region over six days
During their first six days of operation, three “Phantom” vehicles in Kyiv and the Kyiv region automatically detected 7,012 instances of speeding.
In a Telegram post on Friday, the agency noted that these specifically involved instances of speeding by 50 km/h or more.
“Patrol police officers also stopped 55 drivers for serious traffic violations: running a red light, crossing a double solid line, driving into oncoming traffic, and violating intersection rules,” the statement said.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, “Phantom” can detect vehicles traveling in both the same and opposite directions, whether the vehicle is in motion or stationary. “Therefore, it is no longer enough for a driver to slow down only after seeing a patrol car,” the statement emphasizes.
At the same time, as the Ministry of Internal Affairs notes, “Phantoms” are not only used for automatic speed detection but are also accompanied by police crews who can stop violators’ vehicles and issue citations directly on the spot.
“The main goal of using ‘Phantoms’ is not to increase the number of citations, but to foster a consistent habit of obeying traffic laws, reduce the number of traffic accidents, and save lives,” the statement concludes.
