Von der Leyen and European leaders arrived in Kyiv

On Wednesday, July 15, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in the Ukrainian capital along with a number of European leaders. Also participating in the visit were Moldovan President Maia Sandu and Romanian President Nicușor Dan.

 

Also on the visit were Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša, Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

The purpose of the visit and additional details were not disclosed in advance for security reasons.

“I have just arrived in Kyiv on my eleventh visit to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war. This is a special moment. Ukraine has made significant progress in strengthening its military capabilities. The initiative is gradually shifting in its favor. I will announce new initiatives aimed at integrating our defense industries. This will enable us to produce more weapons and do so more quickly. We will also discuss Ukraine’s EU accession process and preparations for the coming winter,” von der Leyen wrote.

Von der Leyen was last in Kyiv on the anniversary of the full-scale invasion. At that time, a number of high-ranking foreign guests arrived in the capital, including European Council President António Costa, as well as 11 other foreign leaders, including the heads of government of Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Iceland, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, as well as lower-level representatives from other countries and organizations.

Von der Leyen mentioned a possible date for Montenegro’s accession to the EU.
