Greece will help restore the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra complex, which was damaged by a Russian attack

The Greek government has officially announced its readiness to finance and support the restoration of the historic monastic complex of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

Greek Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni stated that her country will cover the costs of developing detailed restoration studies for this unique UNESCO World Heritage site.

In addition to the direct restoration of the shrine, Athens plans to significantly expand and strengthen cultural cooperation with Ukraine in the field of historic preservation.

This large-scale investment by European partners will help restore the authentic appearance of one of Eastern Europe’s most important Orthodox shrines.

Ukrainian authorities have confirmed that this unique site was struck during a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack, although Moscow has consistently denied responsibility for this war crime.

The destruction of a religious site of this significance has sparked a wave of outrage and deep concern among the international community.

The nearly 1,000-year-old monastery, founded in 1051, is one of the most important centers of Orthodox Christianity and a symbol of Ukraine’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

During the hostile airstrike, a fire broke out, causing serious damage to the roof of the famous Assumption Cathedral.

In addition, experts documented extensive damage to walls, facades, and historic interiors throughout the complex. According to preliminary expert estimates, the complex restoration work will take years and cost millions of euros.

The international aid program provides not only for the allocation of financial tranches but also for the involvement of Europe’s leading specialists in the restoration process.

As part of this humanitarian and cultural initiative, Greece also plans to actively promote a memorandum of cooperation between the European Center for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments and the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.
