German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived by train in the Ukrainian capital on Sunday, October 4, on an unannounced visit. Immediately upon arrival, the head of the German government reaffirmed Germany’s continued unwavering support for Ukraine on the eve of what will be the fifth winter amid a full-scale war.

During his visit, Merz will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The German politician noted the resilience of the Ukrainian people in the face of daily Russian shelling of cities, residential buildings, and thermal power plants. In addition, the chancellor emphasized that the partnership between the two countries is mutually beneficial, as German and Ukrainian companies are already jointly developing technologies that benefit both nations.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadepul stated that negotiations to end Russia’s war against Ukraine could take place in the near future. At the same time, the head of the German Foreign Ministry did not specify any concrete dates for possible negotiations.

Prior to this, German Chancellor Merz had stated that Moscow was not ready for negotiations.
