The watermelon season is kicking off in the Kherson region, and farmers have announced their expected prices

The large-scale harvest of watermelons will begin next week in the Kherson region. Despite challenging weather conditions, the war, and irrigation problems, local farmers are forecasting a good start to the season.

According to preliminary estimates, the wholesale price of Kherson watermelons this year will be approximately 10 hryvnias per kilogram. Producers are hoping for a stable harvest and a gradual increase in market supply.

According to Prokudin, the growth of watermelons has been slightly delayed this year due to a cool and rainy spring. At the same time, he assured that weather conditions, the war, and ongoing risks will not prevent Kherson farmers from supplying Ukrainians with melons.

In 2026, approximately 1,000 hectares of watermelons and over 400 hectares of cantaloupes were planted in the Kherson region

Prokudin noted that following the destruction of the region’s irrigation system, farmers have been forced to rely primarily on artesian wells and certain sections of the Ingulets Canal. This significantly increases the cost of growing melons and watermelons.

“Due to the destruction of the region’s irrigation system, farmers are relying primarily on artesian wells and certain sections of the Ingulets Canal to grow melons and watermelons, which significantly increases production costs,” the regional governor said.

This was reported with reference to Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson Regional State Administration.

As a reminder, approximately 1,000 hectares of watermelons have been planted in the de-occupied Kherson region.

The home of Ukrainian figure skater Kirill Marsak was destroyed as a result of an attack on Kherson.
