A new entry and exit system has officially gone into effect at EU borders

As of today, April 10, the Entry/Exit System (EES), which digitizes border control, is fully operational at all external borders of the European Union.

This was announced by the European Commission.

The system records the entries and exits of third-country nationals, including Ukrainians, who travel to the 29 countries of the Schengen Area for short stays. It collects biographical and biometric data, replacing traditional passport stamps.

The EES enables the automatic detection of overstays, document fraud, and potential security threats.

Since its launch in October 2025, the system has already recorded over 52 million border crossings, more than 27,000 refusals of entry, and identified approximately 700 individuals posing a threat.

The average processing time per traveler is about 70 seconds.

During the first entry, a digital profile of the individual is created, which is subsequently used for rapid verification during subsequent trips. This involves scanning the passport, taking a photograph, and collecting fingerprints (except for children under 12).

The European Commission emphasizes that the full launch of the system should strengthen border security, improve migration control, and increase the efficiency of border services.

As a reminder, starting in 2026, a new EU control system will be in effect for Ukrainians entering Poland.

Trains will also cross the border faster thanks to a project with Spain.
