Psychotropic drugs disguised as automotive chemicals were discovered at the border with Romania

At the Ukrainian-Romanian border, law enforcement officers thwarted an attempt to illegally import nearly 1.7 kg of PVP, a highly dangerous psychotropic substance, into Ukraine.

The contraband was concealed in a truck under the guise of ordinary automotive chemicals

Thanks to the vigilance of customs officers and the swift actions of law enforcement, a large-scale synthetic drug trafficking ring was successfully dismantled.

According to the investigation, the incident occurred at the “Porubne–Siret” border crossing in Chernivtsi Oblast.

The driver of the truck, who was engaged in international transport and was traveling from Romania, attempted to mislead officials during the inspection.

During the customs inspection, he claimed that he was not transporting any goods or substances subject to mandatory declaration or restrictions on movement across the state border.

The driver’s behavior and a risk assessment prompted the inspectors to conduct a more thorough inspection of the vehicle.

“In fact, there were hidden containers of a psychotropic substance in the truck. Part of the substance was placed in a used motor oil bottle, and the rest in a container that had previously held coolant concentrate. Everything was hidden in a toolbox,” the agency noted.

During the in-depth inspection, customs officers discovered liquids of unknown origin that raised serious suspicions regarding their actual chemical composition. A rapid analysis conducted on the spot revealed the presence of synthetic cations in the canisters.

Further thorough examination definitively confirmed that the bottles contained PVP—a particularly dangerous psychotropic substance, the circulation of which is strictly prohibited.

Under the procedural guidance of prosecutors from the Chernivtsi Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the driver was notified of suspicion of smuggling psychotropic substances on an especially large scale.

The court fully upheld the prosecution’s motion and imposed the most severe preventive measure on the suspect—detention without the right to bail.

Investigative actions are currently underway to identify the entire network of possible organizers and instigators of the crime.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.
