The petition to remove mathematics from the National Multidisciplinary Test in 2027 did not receive enough votes
A petition to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine calling for the cancellation of the mandatory National Multidisciplinary Test (NMT) in mathematics in 2027 did not gather the required number of signatures to be considered.
As of June 21, it had gathered 13,300 signatures out of the required 25,000.
The petition noted that making mathematics a mandatory subject on the National Multidisciplinary Test places excessive psychological pressure on high school graduates, creates unequal conditions for applicants to humanities, creative, and social science programs, and may affect admission results even for those for whom this subject is not their major.
The author also emphasized that success often depends on individual aptitude for mathematics rather than motivation, and that intensive preparation causes stress, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion.
The petition proposed making mathematics an elective subject within the NMT.
Currently, the NMT model requires students to take exams in Ukrainian language, mathematics, Ukrainian history, and one elective subject.
Debates continue regarding the testing format: some politicians propose changing the list of required subjects, but the Ministry of Education and Science and the government advocate keeping mathematics as a required subject.
At the same time, the education ombudsman and a number of government officials believe that the current NMT model should remain unchanged, especially under martial law.
This is evidenced by data from the government’s electronic petition platform.
Participants in the main NMT sessions, who took the tests on June 4 and 5, can now view their official results on a 100–200-point scale in their personal accounts.
Earlier, the Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment commented on the situation in the Odesa region, where participants in the National Multidisciplinary Test spent nearly 13 hours at the testing center due to prolonged air raid alerts. According to the agency, graduates were offered the option to reschedule the exam for an additional session, but they declined and decided to wait until the testing was over and take the NMT on the same day.
As a reminder, foreigners in Ukraine may be required to take a paid Ukrainian language exam.
