Strawberries and cherries are getting cheaper: how fruit prices have changed in Ukraine
The seasonal drop in berry prices continues in Ukraine. As of June 10, strawberry prices have fallen by another 5%, while cherry prices have dropped by as much as 23%.
At the same time, the cost of apples, bananas, oranges, and lemons remains stable.
At the capital’s largest wholesale market, “Stolichny,” apples are selling for between 28 and 55 hryvnias per kilogram.
Bananas cost between 69 and 75 hryvnias, oranges between 70 and 85 hryvnias, and lemons between 140 and 150 hryvnias per kilogram.
The most noticeable price drop has been recorded for seasonal berries. Strawberries currently cost between 55 and 95 hryvnias per kilogram, which is 5% cheaper than before.
Cherries are also continuing to get cheaper—their market price ranges from 70 to 120 hryvnias per kilogram.
Experts attribute this trend to an increase in the supply of Ukrainian produce. Open-field berries are actively entering the market, which traditionally leads to lower prices.
This is particularly noticeable in the strawberry market, where supply is growing daily.
According to retail chains, competition for customers remains strong in supermarkets. ATB currently offers the cheapest bananas, while the Silpo chain offers a wide selection of seasonal berries.
At Novus, apples are sold starting at 39.90 hryvnia per kilogram.
At the same time, various trends are observed in the fruit market. While berries are becoming cheaper due to a seasonal increase in harvest, prices for imported products largely depend on the exchange rate.
This primarily applies to bananas, oranges, and other fruits imported from abroad.
Experts are also drawing attention to the situation with apples. Due to the gradual depletion of last year’s harvest, their prices may rise in the coming months.
The new harvest of Ukrainian apples will not appear on the market until late summer.
Despite the current drop in cherry prices, some varieties remain expensive. On average, Ukrainian cherries cost about 130 hryvnias per kilogram, and at some retail outlets, prices can reach 200 hryvnias.
At the same time, compared to the start of the season, the cost of the fruit has already dropped by nearly half.
The situation with stone fruits remains more complicated. Due to spring frosts, the apricot and cherry harvests in some regions were damaged, which affected prices.
Currently, apricots and cherries cost an average of about 250 hryvnias per kilogram, compared to 150–180 hryvnias a year earlier.
This is according to data from the Stolichny market website.
