In 1998, the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth recommended celebrating International Youth Day on August 12. The conference took place in Lisbon with the participation of representatives from governments and international organizations.
In December 1999, the UN General Assembly endorsed this recommendation with Resolution A/RES/54/120. The first International Youth Day was observed on August 12, 2000. Since then, this date has served as an annual reminder to the world of the needs of young people and their role in society. Interestingly, the UN began focusing on youth issues much earlier. In 1965, the General Assembly endorsed a declaration on promoting the ideals of peace, mutual respect, and mutual understanding among nations among young people.
