In the Kyiv region, a man is suspected of embezzling 3.5 million hryvnias in benefits intended for the family of a fallen soldier
In the Bila Tserkva District of the Kyiv Region, law enforcement officials have identified a 59-year-old man suspected of embezzling 3.5 million hryvnias in benefits intended for the family of a deceased soldier.
This was reported by the Kyiv Regional Police.
“Under the procedural supervision of the Bila Tserkva District Prosecutor’s Office, investigators notified the suspect of charges of fraud committed on an especially large scale and the disposal of property obtained by criminal means (Part 5 of Article 190 and Part 1 of Article 209 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine),” the statement reads.
According to the investigation, the man misled the deceased’s brother, who confirmed that the suspect was allegedly the soldier’s father. The suspect subsequently applied to the relevant authorities for a one-time cash benefit and received 3,525,000 UAH into his bank account, part of which he spent on purchasing real estate in the Bucha district, police said.
It was also established that the deceased soldier left behind a minor son, who suffered financial losses of over 3.5 million hryvnias as a result of the suspect’s actions.
The court ordered the suspect to be held in pretrial detention. The penalty for these offenses carries a sentence of up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property, according to the Kyiv Regional Police.
