A suspect in the case of a child's death at a camp near Kyiv has been detained in Montenegro

The former director of the “Olympic Village” children’s camp, where a 10-year-old boy died in 2023, has been detained in Montenegro. A court has ordered her arrest pending extradition at the request of Ukrainian authorities. Procedures are currently being prepared for her return to Ukraine.

The case involving the death of a 10-year-old boy at the “Olympic Village” children’s camp in 2023 has entered a new phase—the suspect has been detained abroad. A court in Montenegro has ordered the extradition arrest of the facility’s former director.

According to the prosecutor’s office, after being notified of the charges, the woman left Ukraine, prompting authorities to issue an international arrest warrant for her. Subsequently, Interpol issued a “Red Notice,” which made it possible to locate her. “On June 21 of this year, the suspect was detained in Montenegro,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

Currently, Ukrainian authorities are working on the extradition process to bring the suspect back for further investigative actions and trial. The prosecutor’s office emphasizes that this case is of fundamental importance, and that responsibility for the safety of children at camps lies directly with the adults who organize their activities. “When a child is at camp, adults bear responsibility for their life and safety. Not just formally, but in reality—every day and every minute,” the prosecution’s statement reads.

It is also emphasized that attempting to evade responsibility by fleeing abroad does not exempt one from justice, and international mechanisms must ensure the suspects’ return to Ukraine. “Fleeing abroad does not absolve one of responsibility. No country and no border should become a means of evading justice,” the prosecutor’s office emphasizes. Separately, a trial is underway in the case of the camp counselor, who is accused of leaving a child in danger. His indictment has already been filed with the court.

The prosecutor’s office notes that the investigation is under control, and the ultimate goal is to establish the full picture of events and the responsibility of everyone who could have contributed to the tragedy. This was reported by the Prosecutor General.

As a reminder, the SBU detained a Russian strike coordinator targeting Chernivtsi.

The SBU also uncovered a Russian intelligence network that was planning terrorist attacks using teenagers as operatives.
