A Russian intelligence agent was detained in Kyiv for setting fire to a car belonging to a soldier from the Third Assault Battalion

Law enforcement officers in the capital quickly identified and arrested a 48-year-old man who, acting on orders from enemy handlers, destroyed a Ukrainian soldier’s vehicle.

The perpetrator hoped to profit from setting fire to a vehicle bearing military symbols, but instead of the promised money, he faces the prospect of spending the next decade behind bars.

The incident occurred in the Svyatoshynsky district of Kyiv on Druzhkivska Street, where an Opel was parked in the courtyard of a high-rise building.

The vehicle belonged to a serviceman of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade and bore the corresponding markings of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The investigation established that an unemployed local resident received an offer to “collaborate” via a messaging app from a representative of the Russian special services.

For setting fire to the cars of Ukrainian soldiers, the client promised the suspect a reward of $1,000 and provided detailed instructions.

Acting according to the enemy handler’s plan, the arsonist scouted out a target in advance and purchased the necessary flammable substances.

At night, he carried out his criminal intent by setting the car on fire, after which he attempted to document the result for a report to his “superiors.”

“The suspect expected a monetary reward from the client but never received it,” the Kyiv police reported.

Operatives from the Svyatoshynsky District Police Department, in collaboration with the SBU and the Kyiv City Police Headquarters, identified the arsonist and apprehended him “hot on the trail” at his residence.

During a search, investigators seized a mobile phone containing evidence of correspondence with the perpetrator, lighters, matches, and containers with remnants of a flammable mixture.

Law enforcement officers detained the man in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine to determine a preventive measure.

According to preliminary reports from local media, unrequited love may have been the cause of the altercation.

On Saturday, April 18, 58-year-old Dmytro Vasylchenkov opened fire on passersby on Demiivska Street, after which he took hostages at the “Velmart” supermarket. Six people were killed in the attack, and about 15 others were injured to varying degrees.

Earlier, a video appeared online showing police officers fleeing from the shooter during the terrorist attack in Kyiv on April 18, leaving civilians behind, including a child.
