In Lviv, medical personnel saved a 61-year-old woman with severe multiple injuries following a traffic accident
In Lviv, doctors saved a 61-year-old woman from the Lviv region who suffered severe injuries in a traffic accident. The woman underwent several complex surgeries, spent 13 days on a ventilator, and returned home after a long course of treatment.
The accident occurred on May 16. According to medical staff, Maria Zhydyk was driving out of her driveway with her husband and eight-year-old grandson when another car crashed into theirs at high speed. The brunt of the impact was on the side where the woman was sitting.
The victim was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with an open head injury with a concussion, fractures of nine ribs and both collarbones with displacement, hemopneumothorax, as well as a ruptured spleen, which caused internal bleeding.
Doctors immediately performed surgery, during which they removed the ruptured spleen and stopped the bleeding. They also drained the pleural cavity to remove blood and air.
After the surgery, the woman spent 17 days in the intensive care unit, 13 of which were on a ventilator. Subsequently, orthopedic trauma surgeons performed two more surgeries, during which they stabilized her fractured clavicles with titanium plates and screws.
While she was still in the ICU, physical therapists began working with the patient to prevent complications involving the respiratory system. Once her condition stabilized, she continued her rehabilitation in the surgical ward.
The woman has now been discharged home. She says she is grateful to the medical staff for saving her life and for their professional care.
