Ukraine is awaiting the release of a €90 billion loan and the tightening of sanctions against Russia

Ukraine is actively working to secure a €90 billion loan from the EU and to secure the adoption of the 20th package of sanctions against Russia.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this statement during a conversation with journalists.

According to the head of state, Ukraine expects to receive the first tranche of the loan in late May or early June. The funds are planned to be directed toward the needs of the army and the development of domestic defense production.

“Of course, we are counting on and have been working toward a positive outcome so that the €90 billion is released; this is a priority for us… We will expedite the first tranche we are counting on as quickly as possible so that we receive the funds by the end of May or early June,” Zelenskyy emphasized.

The President clarified that the funding will primarily be directed toward supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the production of Ukrainian weapons, particularly drones and electronic warfare systems. Part of the funds is planned to be used to purchase scarce weapons from international partners.

Separately, Zelenskyy underscored the importance of adopting a new sanctions package against Russia and further increasing pressure, particularly on the Russian energy sector and the so-called “shadow fleet.”

“We are also working on the next sanctions. We believe that everything will be unblocked. Ukraine has done everything it promised, within the timeframe it promised,” the President noted.
