Ukrainians Have Been Warned About Price Changes for Meat and Eggs

Ukrainians Have Been Warned About Price Changes for Meat and Eggs

Poultry and egg producers are forecasting changes in product prices due to the restructuring of supply chains and new requirements from retail chains. The industry is also feeling the effects of Russian strikes on logistics infrastructure.

At the same time, an expert notes that the market situation could develop in various ways. As long as Ukrainian ports remain closed, prices for poultry meat and eggs may continue to fall due to the nature of exports and domestic supply.

“Everything that’s happening right now is affecting prices. But the biggest problem is the blocked ports and the oversupply in the domestic market. The price of eggs is falling now not because they can’t get them to stores, but because there is overproduction of eggs on the market,” the expert explains.

Consequently, the surplus of product on the domestic market creates unmet demand and puts downward pressure on prices, he notes.

“There are no exports, and until there are, prices will continue to fall. If exports are allowed, the situation will stabilize, and producers will reach a more or less acceptable level of profitability. Right now, they are operating at a loss. All production remains in Ukraine,” Pendzin states.

For its part, the “Union of Poultry Farmers of Ukraine” association has warned of a potential reduction in product variety and production, as well as higher prices for poultry meat and eggs for end consumers. Retail chains are trying to reorganize their logistics to deliver directly to the supermarkets themselves, bypassing distribution centers affected by the Russian occupiers.

Oleg Pendzin, a member of the Economic Discussion Club, spoke about this in an interview with UNIAN.
