Ukrposhta has launched its own aviation security service
"Ukrposhta" has established its own aviation security service, which will be responsible for screening international shipments.
The new unit is intended to reduce the risk of dangerous or prohibited items being included in air shipments, as well as to help minimize delays during package inspections.
Why the service was created
Smiliansky explained that Ukrposhta processes and ships more than 90% of its packages abroad within a maximum of 24 hours. At the same time, entire batches of mail can be delayed at the airport or at the border due to issues with individual shipments.
Such delays also affect Ukrainian entrepreneurs, as relationships with customers, seller ratings on marketplaces, and the competitiveness of Ukrainian goods abroad all depend on delivery speed.
How the system will work
Specialists from the new service underwent training under the guidance of experts from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The training covered international methods for creating risk profiles and identifying dangerous and prohibited items.
The system will be developed in collaboration with the State Customs Service of Ukraine. However, Ukrposhta will not replace the functions of customs.
The company also plans to invest in specialized equipment, including:
- state-of-the-art X-ray systems;
- X-ray television introscopes at automated sorting hubs;
- artificial intelligence technologies for analyzing risk profiles and other types of control.
According to Smiliansky, this should speed up the process from parcel processing at the terminal to its transfer to customs.
“Ukrposhta” is preparing for the resumption of air transport
The creation of an aviation security service does not mean that Ukrposhta will purchase its own aircraft in the near future. At the same time, the company is already preparing for the possible resumption of air transport from Ukraine.
Currently, Ukrposhta uses 159 air routes and conducts international mail exchange with 230 countries and territories worldwide. The main postal flows pass through air hubs in London, Frankfurt, Warsaw, Riga, and Chisinau.
Smilyansky emphasized that the goal of the new service is to strengthen security controls over shipments while making the process as unobtrusive as possible for customers and maintaining the speed of international delivery.
As a reminder, Russia has attacked Ukrposhta twice in the Chernihiv region.
Ukrposhta has begun printing customers’ personal data on receipts.
As a reminder, Ukrposhta continues to install in-branch parcel lockers in its offices. They are currently operational in 15 regions of Ukraine and allow most customers to receive packages without waiting in the general line.
Ukrposhta has suspended operations at its last brick-and-mortar branch in the frontline town of Druzhkivka in Donetsk Oblast due to constant Russian shelling and the threat to employees and local residents.
