In Ukraine, nearly 900 km of water mains are being laid to serve 10 million people

In Ukraine, approximately 900 km of new water mains are being laid to ensure water supply for 10 million residents. The systems are being prepared for winter, including the creation of backup water sources and the provision of independent power supplies for water utilities.

 

In total, 30 projects are being implemented across 14 regions as part of resilience plans. These projects include nearly 900 kilometers of new water mains, backup water intakes, power supplies, and equipment to enable water utilities to operate autonomously.

Once the work is completed, more than 10 million people will have a more reliable water supply. Some of the work is being carried out by the communities themselves, and some by the Recovery Agency.

Construction is currently underway in several regions:

• The Bucha community in the Kyiv region: here, a dual-line water pipeline nearly 20 kilometers long is being built, which will connect Gavrylivka, Lubyanka, Blystavitsa, Bucha, and Vorzel. Twelve kilometers of pipes have already been laid, and new wells, pumping stations, and water treatment plants are also being built. The two lines will ensure that the water supply is not interrupted if one section needs to be repaired;
• Dnipropetrovsk Oblast: The Recovery Agency is completing systems for nearly 30,000 residents in 49 settlements who lost access to a reliable water source after Russia destroyed the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant;
• Odesa Region: Two group water mains are being built to serve 29 settlements with a population of over 68,000 people. This involves approximately 218 kilometers of main water lines and nearly 385 kilometers of distribution networks within the settlements.

Before the cold weather sets in, the plan is to complete all projects currently in their final stages and ensure backup power for existing systems.

Protective structures for water supply facilities are being built simultaneously with the new pipes, rather than after they are put into operation. The system must continue to function during attacks, and if damage occurs, it must allow for a rapid restoration of water supply.

Ukraine is preparing a large-scale pension reform, which involves revising the mechanism for calculating benefits and increasing the minimum pension for certain categories of citizens to 6,000 hryvnias.
