Since the beginning of the year, 1,556 civilians have been injured by Russian landmines in Ukraine

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 1,556 civilians have been injured by enemy mines and explosive remnants of war. Of the total number of casualties, 164 were children and 1,392 were adults.

These figures were reported on Telegram by the Main Directorate for Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety.

Statistical data from the Main Directorate for Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety indicate that among the wounded and killed were 287 farmers, 193 unemployed individuals, 156 pensioners, 152 critical infrastructure workers, 156 students, and 97 drivers. For every instance of civilian casualties caused by explosions, Ukrainian law enforcement agencies immediately open criminal proceedings regarding the Russian Federation’s violations of the rules and customs of warfare.

In the first half of this year, an unprecedented increase in the frequency of explosions was recorded, linked to the active use by Russian armed forces of unmanned aerial vehicles for targeted remote mining of infrastructure and civilian facilities. International donors have already been thoroughly briefed on this threat, prompting foreign partners to reach a joint conclusion regarding the urgent need to significantly increase support for Ukraine in carrying out humanitarian demining operations.

Earlier in the Sumy region, a 17-year-old boy was injured in an explosion. The incident occurred near a border village in the Khutir-Mykhailivska community, where he rode his motorcycle over an explosive device.

Dozens of partner countries have also joined Ukraine’s humanitarian demining coalition.
