Zelenskyy ordered the restoration of a school in Kyiv following a drone strike
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ordered the school in Kyiv’s Solomyanskyi District—which was struck by a Russian drone on the morning of October 1—to be restored as quickly as possible. There are also plans to make the facility energy-independent. At the time of the strike, more than 100 students and about 60 staff members were in a shelter; therefore, according to preliminary reports, no one was injured.
On October 1, Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the damaged school in Kyiv’s Solomyanskyi district. After inspecting the building, he instructed the Office of the President, the district administration, and the Ministry of Education and Science to organize its prompt restoration. “I expect that the Office’s team, the district state administration, and the Ministry of Education and Science will ensure the school’s prompt restoration and energy independence. I have issued the relevant instructions,” the president wrote on Telegram.
This is not just about repairing the damaged building. Zelenskyy also instructed officials to ensure the school’s energy independence so that it can operate steadily even in the event of power supply issues. A Russian drone struck the school building on the morning of October 1. The strike damaged the building’s facade at the third-floor level. A fire broke out there after the strike. Most importantly, the children and staff were already in shelters at the time of the attack. According to police, there were more than 100 students and about 60 school staff members there. Preliminary reports indicate that none of them were injured.
Police officers, bomb disposal experts, and State Emergency Service rescuers were on the scene after the strike. They documented the aftermath of the attack and inspected the area. City authorities reported the strike on the school during the morning attack. According to Kyiv, a drone struck the school building in the Solomyanskyi district, after which a fire broke out. The children were in shelters at the time.
Zelenskyy also stated that Russia is deliberately targeting educational institutions. Separately, the president announced that Ukraine is working to strengthen its air defense and increase production of interceptors to combat “Shahed” drones. Thus, following the strike, the school must do more than simply resume normal operations. The authorities plan to repair the damaged parts of the building and equip the school with additional capabilities for self-sufficient operation. Zelenskyy wrote about this in a Telegram post.
On October 1, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine to five defenders. All of them also received the Order of the Golden Star—the highest state award granted to a Hero of Ukraine. In a separate decree, the president awarded another 499 military personnel, police officers, National Guard members, rescue workers, and border guards.
