On September 21, drones attacked Ufa, Russia; the Bashneft oil refinery may have been the target
On the morning of September 21, drones attacked the Russian city of Ufa in Bashkortostan. According to preliminary reports, one of the targets may have been an oil refinery belonging to the “Bashneft” group; the extent of the potential damage is still being assessed.
During the attack, a drone threat alert was declared in Bashkortostan. Russian authorities also temporarily restricted operations at Ufa Airport—the airport stopped receiving and dispatching flights.
Reports of the attack on Ufa began to emerge on the morning of September 21. According to preliminary information, drones attacked the city’s oil refining infrastructure. As of this writing, there is no official information on the extent of the damage.
Ufa is one of Russia’s largest oil refining centers. The city is home to the enterprises “Bashneft-UNPZ,” “Bashneft-Novoyl,” and “Bashneft-Ufanaftokhim,” which are part of the Bashneft group and form a large oil refining complex.
The combined capacity of the three facilities exceeds 23 million metric tons of crude oil per year. The plants produce gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, lubricants, and other products used, in particular, to meet the needs of the Russian army. The distance from Ukraine’s state border to the plants is approximately 1,600 km.
