Lavrov threatened to defend Belarus in the event of an attack by Ukraine
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia is ready to ensure Belarus’s security in the event of possible attacks from Ukraine. According to him, Moscow will employ the full range of measures provided for in the alliance agreements between the two countries.
Lavrov made these remarks in response to a statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding relay stations near the Ukrainian border, which, according to Kyiv, assist in the navigation of Russian drones. Zelenskyy emphasized that Belarus must remove these facilities on its own; otherwise, the Ukrainian Armed Forces may do so.
Lavrov claims that such statements are allegedly aimed at dragging Belarus into the war and expanding the geographical scope of hostilities, which, in his view, complicates the possibility of a political and diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia is attempting to draw Belarus deeper into the war against Ukraine and is considering new scenarios for aggression from its territory.
Belarus’s self-proclaimed president, Alexander Lukashenko, held a meeting on military equipment and announced the preparation of a new state armament program for 2026–2030.
