Massive overnight attack: air defence forces shoot down over 340 aerial targets

On the night of 20 January, Russian forces carried out another large-scale air attack on Ukraine.

This was reported by the Ukrainian Air Force.

Since 19:00 the previous day, the enemy launched dozens of missiles of various types and hundreds of strike drones.

The main target of the attack was Kyiv region, where the country’s defenders once again demonstrated the effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defence systems.

According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the enemy struck with one Zircon anti-ship missile launched from temporarily occupied Crimea, as well as 18 Iskander-M ballistic missiles and S-300 surface-to-air missiles from Russia’s Bryansk and Rostov regions.

Additionally, the enemy fired 15 Kh-101 cruise missiles from the Vologda region.

In addition to missiles, the enemy deployed 339 strike UAVs of various models — including Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and others — most of which were directed at Ukrainian cities from Bryansk, Kursk, Oryol, Millerovo, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, and other occupied territories.

The main objective of the enemy, according to command assessments, was to exhaust Ukraine’s air defence system and strike critical infrastructure.

However, Ukrainian aviation, surface-to-air missile troops, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups effectively countered the massive attack.

As a result of coordinated actions, 342 aerial targets were shot down or suppressed — including 14 ballistic missiles, 13 cruise missiles, and 315 drones of various types. Interceptions took place across northern, southern, eastern, and central regions of Ukraine.

It is worth recalling that a morning attack in Rivne region left over 10,000 households without electricity.

In addition, a Russian attack damaged 12 houses in Zaporizhzhia.
