Putin has asserted his constitutional right to run for office in 2030, but there is a catch

Putin has asserted his constitutional right to run for office in 2030, but there is a catch

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin stated that the current Russian Constitution grants him the legal right to run for president again in 2030. At the same time, he noted that his health is the main factor and a potential obstacle to this.

The Kremlin leader made this statement during a meeting with heads of global news agencies at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026).

Responding to questions from Reuters journalists about his plans to remain in power and his physical ability to lead the country, Putin resorted to religious rhetoric. According to him, Russia faces large-scale and pressing challenges, but long-term planning depends on biological factors.

Specifying the possibility of his participation in the 2030 elections, the head of the aggressor state made the following statements:

  • On the matters of health and life: “Only God knows whether we will have enough health: for me, and you, and everyone gathered here, to live to see tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, let alone tackle the challenges before us and achieve the goals we set for ourselves,” the dictator declared.

  • Legal aspect: He separately noted that the previously adopted amendments to the Russian Constitution fully allow him to run for another six-year term.

  • Premature discussion: Putin emphasized that it is currently “far too early to talk about this,” since his current presidential term, obtained following the March 2024 elections, will end only in four years.

It should be noted that as a result of the so-called “reset” of presidential terms in Russia, adopted through constitutional amendments, Vladimir Putin has the formal opportunity to run in elections not only in 2030 but also in 2036. If he is nominated and wins again, this will allow him to retain dictatorial power in the Russian Federation until he is 84 years old.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin stated that he sees no contradiction between a peace agreement with Ukraine and establishing full control over Donbas. He also reiterated Russia’s readiness for negotiations but emphasized that compromises must come from both sides.

Putin claimed that Russia allegedly does not object to Ukraine’s European integration and its movement toward the European Union. At the same time, he again voiced a series of grievances against the EU and accused the West of supplying weapons to Kyiv.
