Russia shells Kherson with cluster munitions and remotely mines neighbourhoods

Russian occupying forces have intensified terror against Kherson’s civilian population, using cluster munitions and remotely deploying mines in the streets via drones.

Vladyslav Voloshyn, spokesperson for the Southern Defence Forces, told Ukrinform that anti-personnel mines are being found not only in the coastal zone but also directly in residential districts. On 17 February 2026, the police recorded explosive devices at the intersection of Beryslav Highway and Myru Street, posing a lethal threat to pedestrians and vehicles.

According to the spokesperson, some of the submunitions that the enemy scatters across the city are of foreign origin. The military urges Kherson residents to remain extremely vigilant and reminds them not to approach or touch suspicious objects — all findings must be reported to law enforcement immediately. To protect logistical routes from enemy drones, special anti-drone nets have already been installed along the strategic Kherson–Mykolaiv highway.

In Kakhovka, in temporarily occupied Kherson region, Russian forces have conducted mass drops of “petals” from drones into residential areas, creating a significant danger for local residents.

In addition, daily attacks on Kherson and its surrounding communities continue. On 12 February, shelling caused ongoing problems with electricity supply, while water is being provided from backup sources. Tensions in the region remain high due to the occupiers’ activity and the threats they pose to civilians.
