Since early 2025, Russia has damaged hundreds of Ukrzaliznytsia locomotives and railcars

Russia’s massive strikes on Ukrzaliznytsia’s operational assets have led to increased costs for the company, disruptions in transportation, and damage to hundreds of pieces of equipment.

This is stated in the company’s stock exchange announcement regarding the restructuring of its Eurobonds. According to the published presentation, 209 locomotives, 239 passenger cars, and 371 freight cars were damaged as a result of shelling in 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.

In addition to rolling stock, fixed infrastructure suffered extensive damage: 86 bridges and 50 train stations across the country were damaged. The highest intensity of attacks was recorded in the second half of 2025 and at the beginning of this year. Due to the hostilities, the company’s freight volume last year decreased by 8%—to 161 million tons—and revenue fell to $2.189 billion.

Amid deteriorating performance, Ukrzaliznytsia held negotiations with holders of Eurobonds worth over $1 billion regarding their restructuring, but no agreement has been reached yet. The company continues to operate largely thanks to budgetary support, which amounted to $270 million in 2025. Despite constant attacks by Russia, railway workers are quickly restoring service and carrying out evacuation and humanitarian flights.

As a reminder, on the morning of March 8, 2026, a Russian drone carried out a targeted strike on a passenger train on the Kyiv–Sumy route.

Also in March, Russia launched another series of strikes against Ukraine’s port and railway infrastructure. In the morning, a drone attacked a freight train in the Dnipropetrovsk region, injuring two railway workers.

Ukrzaliznytsia canceled some trains due to the security situation.
