Russian electronic warfare units in Kaliningrad are altering the flight paths of Ukrainian drones — The Telegraph

Russia is using electronic warfare systems based in Kaliningrad to interfere with the navigation of Ukrainian drones carrying out attacks on Russian territory. According to media reports, due to the operation of Russian electronic warfare systems, some drones may lose their course and veer toward Finland or the Baltic states. This involves the jamming of satellite navigation signals and the alteration of drone flight paths.

This was reported by the British publication The Telegraph, as cited by the Finnish broadcaster Yle.

According to a journalistic investigation, Russian electronic warfare systems are jamming and spoofing GPS signals, causing Ukrainian drones to lose navigation accuracy and fly toward the Baltic states and Finland.

This involves GPS spoofing technology, where systems transmit fake coordinates instead of real ones. As a result of this interference, drones incorrectly determine their location and alter their route based on the distorted data, which significantly complicates the execution of their missions.

Russian electronic warfare systems deployed in the Kaliningrad region are creating serious navigation disruptions not only for drones but also for civilian infrastructure.

Regular disruptions to GPS and other satellite navigation systems are recorded in the region, affecting aviation and maritime navigation in the Baltic Sea.

Analysts and government agencies in the Baltic states and Germany have repeatedly linked these incidents to the operation of Russian electronic warfare systems in Kaliningrad. This involves both signal jamming and spoofing—the manipulation of navigation data, causing systems to determine a false location.

Due to such interference, ships in the Baltic Sea periodically experience errors in coordinates, deviations from their route, or loss of stable GPS connectivity, forcing crews to switch to backup navigation methods.

One such instance was an incident in September 2025, when the plane carrying Spain’s Defense Minister Margarita Robles to Lithuania encountered an attempt to jam the GPS signal used for its navigation.
