U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated during a media briefing in Manila that Russia, the aggressor state, is losing 5,000 to 6,000 military personnel—killed or wounded—every week in the war against Ukraine.

According to Rubio, he has received information that the war in Ukraine is the only conflict in living memory in which the number of soldiers killed in action exceeds the number of wounded. “That’s how bloody this war is. The Russians, I believe, are losing more than 5,000–6,000 soldiers a week. That’s a staggering number,” the U.S. Secretary of State said.

At the same time, Rubio noted that Ukraine has also paid a heavy price in this war. He mentioned civilian casualties and the shelling of Kyiv, adding that, in his view, the number of such incidents has increased to some extent.

The U.S. Secretary of State said that both sides must have an incentive to end the war. According to him, the United States will continue to seek a compromise that will bring the war to an end and is prepared to take on that role if the opportunity arises.

In Manila, Rubio also met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He reported that he discussed with the Russian minister the need to end the war against Ukraine and also emphasized the need for “new ideas” to break the deadlock in the negotiations.
