The SBU has charged a Russian general with torturing civilians in Yagidne

The SBU has charged a Russian general with torturing civilians in Yagidne

The Security Service of Ukraine has gathered evidence and formally charged Russian Army Major General Denis Barila in absentia.

This was reported by the SBU press service.

The Russian commander is implicated in organizing inhumane conditions for the detention of nearly four hundred civilians in the basement of a school in the Chernihiv region.

The investigation established that in March 2022, Barila commanded the Russian Federation’s 55th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade during the occupation of the village of Yagidne.

On his orders, the invaders, threatening to shoot them, herded 369 local residents into the school basement to use them as “human shields.”

Among the captives were 69 minors, including infants, who were held in appalling unsanitary conditions.

Each person had less than half a square meter of space, making it impossible for people to stay in the enclosed space under normal conditions.

The victims were strictly forbidden from going outside for fresh air and were denied basic medical care.

Due to the complete lack of medicine, proper food, and water, 10 civilians died from suffocation and illness.

The occupiers long prohibited the removal of the bodies of the deceased, so they remained in the basement alongside the living, including children.

Based on the evidence gathered, Denys Barila is charged with violating the laws and customs of war under the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Comprehensive measures are currently underway to bring the war criminal to justice for his actions in Yagidne.
