The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense plans to more actively recruit foreigners to serve in combat units. According to Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, the ministry aims to have foreign volunteers fill 30% to 50% of assault and infantry positions in the future. The Ministry of Defense also announced the gradual discharge of soldiers who have been on the front lines the longest.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense plans to expand its program for recruiting foreigners to serve in the Armed Forces. The ministry believes this will help strengthen combat units and reduce the burden on Ukrainian troops. This was announced by Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

According to him, the Ministry of Defense is opening up the market for recruiting foreigners to attract more volunteers to the Ukrainian military. “We are opening up the market for recruiting foreigners to strengthen combat units and save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers. Our goal is to fill 30–50% of assault and infantry positions with foreigners,” Fedorov stated.

The minister explained that this primarily involves reinforcing units that carry out the most difficult combat missions. The Ministry of Defense expects that the involvement of foreign volunteers will help partially reduce the burden on Ukrainian soldiers. Additionally, Fedorov announced changes for service members who have served the longest in the Defense Forces and have significant combat experience. “For those who have served the longest in the Defense Forces and spent the most time in combat, we will begin a gradual discharge from service by the end of the year,” he said.

The minister has not yet provided further details regarding the discharge mechanism or how the expansion of foreign recruitment will take place. At the same time, the Ministry of Defense emphasizes that one of the priorities remains saving the lives of Ukrainian servicemen and strengthening the army’s combat capability.

Ukraine has previously opened the door for foreign citizens to join the ranks of the Defense Forces. Foreign volunteers serve in various units and participate in combat operations on Ukraine’s side. This was announced by Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
